ST. PETER, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) kicked off the singles portion of Friday's Gustavus Invitational with a victory — and the Cardinal senior matched that effort Saturday afternoon during the doubles portion of the event.
 
Dosser teamed up with Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) to collected an 8-2 victory over UW-Superior's Andrian Tejada/Haley Quick in their ITA Midwest Regional opening round, before falling to Julia Baber/Lauryn Douglas of Concordia (Wis.) in the second round.
 
SMU doubles teams of Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.)/Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.), Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.)/Gracie Miller (West Salem, Wis.) and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.)/Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) were not as all three dropped their opening-round doubles matches.
 
Peterson/Henderson rebounded from that opening-round loss with an 8-5 victory over Sabrina Tang/Ionna Glannakou of Central Iowa, but came up short in its second match of the day, dropping a marathon 8-7 (10-8) decision to St. Catherine's Amalin Sorjia/Avery Munsler.
 
Stiegel/Miller and Buerman/Boomgaarden, meanwhile, both dropped their consolation matches, falling to Bethany Lutheran's Emily Yehle/Kaitlyn Berreau, 6-2, and St. Catherine's Lilli Vang/Anna Luksik, 7-5, respectively.
 
In Friday's action during the opening day of the event, Dosser, Buerman, and Henderson all picked up singles wins.
 
Dosser, one of two Cardinals competing in the ITA Midwest Regional, kicked off tournament play with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bella Tranquillino of Simpson, before falling to UW-Whitewater's Kasey Schlitch 6-0, 6-2.
 
Peterson wasn't as fortunate in her ITA opening round, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to St. Olaf's Allie Prokosh.
 
While Dosser and Peterson were busy competing at the ITA, the remainder of the Cardinal squad took part in the Gustavus Invitational, highlighted by opening-round wins from Buerman and Henderson.


Buerman delivered an 8-5 win over Luther's Jalen DenHartog, with Henderson recording an 8-5 victory over Emma Clift of St. Olaf. Both Buerman and Henderson came up short in their second-round matches, with each falling 8-5.
 
Boomgaarden, Renwick, Miller, and Stiegel all suffered losses in their Gustavus Invite singles matches — Boomgaarden fell 8-0 to St. Catherine's Erin Loterbauer, while Renwick lost to Abby Struble of Luther 8-3; Miller dropped an 8-1 decision to Luther's Kiley Nolan; and Stiegel came up short against St. Catherine's Anna Luksik, 8-1.
 
The Cardinals officially kick off the 2023 season on Jan. 28, when they host Martin Luther in a 12:30 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
