SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their games this weekend against Bethel and Grinnell sitting at 5-5-1 overall, while sporting a 1-4-0 record in five conference contests..
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals — coming off a 1-0 win over Concordia last Saturday — posted their second straight shutout the following afternoon, battling UW-Stevens Point to a 0-0 draw at Ochrymowycz Field.
• FAST STARTS: The Cardinals have scored a goal before the eight-minute mark four times this season. Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) scored at 7:09 against UMN Morris on Sept. 1, Laura Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.) needed just 2:55 to put SMU out front against Wartburg on Sept. 3, Ella Lahart (Sherwood, Ore.) found the back of the net 7:52 into the first half against Beloit on Sept. 5, and Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) scored at 2:19 of the first half vs. Lawrence four days later.
• HOME ON THE ROAD: The Cardinals, who went 6-1-2 in their eight home games last season, have collected four of their five wins this season on the road. SMU is 4-2-0 in six road contests, while sitting at 1-3-1 at Ochrymowycz Field.
• STREAK-SNAPPER: Saint Mary’s snapped its four-game conference losing streak with last Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Concordia. SMU had dropped decisions to St. Catherine, Augsburg, Saint Benedict, and Gustavus prior to last Saturday’s win.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: Twenty-three of Saint Mary’s last 30 games have been decided by shutout — including 14 of SMU’s last 16 wins. … All five of SMU’s victories this season have been by shutout — 6-0 over UMN Morris, and 1-0 over Beloit, Lawrence, UW-Stout, and Concordia. … All told, nine of SMU’s 11 games this season have been decided by shutout — the lone exceptions, 2-1 losses to Wartburg and Gustavus.
• THROWING UP ZEROS II: The Cardinals’ 0-0 draw against UW-Stevens Point last Sunday marked the first time SMU has played to a scoreless tie since a 0-0 deadlock against Augsburg on Oct. 8, 2022.
• SPREADING THE WEALTH: Saint Mary’s 12 goals this season have come from nine different players, led by Samantha Munson, who has netted a team-best three goals. Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) is second on the team with two, while Capacio, Lahart, Ashe, Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.), Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.), Hannah Bradley (Portland, Ore.), and Sadie Chrusciel (Geneva, Ill.) own SMU’s other seven goals.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Saint Mary’s has had three players net their first collegiate goals this season. Chrusciel tallied her first goal as a Cardinals in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to Gustavus; Bradley netted her first collegiate goal in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 1, while Ashe’s first-half tally against Wartburg two days later was her first as a Cardinal.
• CAREER FIRST II: Samantha Munson collected her first collegiate multiple-point game, scoring once and assisting on two others for a four-point effort in SMU’s 6-0 win over UMN Morris on Sept. 1.
• LENDING A HAND: Samantha Munson and Peyton Maier (Elk River, Minn.) share the team lead with three assists each, while Lahart, Ashe, McKinney, Leonard, Anna Warneke (Maple Grove, Minn.), and Kaylen Pray (Port Townsend, Wash.) have all collected one helper..
• POINT PRODUCER: Samantha Munson sits atop the team’s points race with nine (3 G, 3 A), followed by Leonard with five (2 G, 1 A), Ashe (1 G, 1 A), McKinney (1 G, 1 A), Lahart (1 G, 1 A), and Maier (3 A) with three each, and Bradley, Skoruppa, and Capacio with two each.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) has started seven of the Cardinals’ nine games in goal, compiling a 1.21 goals-against-average and a .742 save percentage. McKenzie Munson and Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) own SMU’s other two starts, with Munson stopping all eight shots she’s faced in 270:00 minutes, while Nadal has stopped all four shots in 81:13 minutes.… Peckosh has made a team-high 25 saves in seven games.
• GOALKEEPING FIRSTS: McKenzie Munson recorded her first collegiate win and first career shutout — in her first collegiate start, a 1-0 win over Beloit on Sept. 5. … Peckosh stopped a career-high eight shots in racking up career shutout No. 1 against UW-Stevens Point on Oct. 16, 2022. … Peckosh made her first collegiate start against UW-Stout on Oct. 5, 2022, stopping both Blue Devil shots she faced in 45:00 of play, while making her first appearance in a Cardinal uniform on Sept. 17, 2022, making three saves in 22 minutes of relief in SMU’s 3-0 loss to Saint Benedict. … Nadal made her first collegiate start on Sept. 21, 2022 against Luther, stopping seven first-half shots.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: Saint Mary’s has scored eight of its 12 goals this season in the first half. … Saint Mary’s has allowed just eight goals in nine games — three in the first half and five in the second. … SMU has outshot its opponents 160-109, including 77-45 in shots on goal. … SMU’s six goals against the Cougars on Sept. 1 are the most since SMU poured in 11 goals against Martin Luther on Sept. 6, 2021.
BETHEL SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Royals head into their Saturday conference showdown at Saint Mary’s sporting a 3-3-2 overall record, including a 1-2-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Bethel has been off since Sept. 27, when Macalester scored the game’s only goal with less than 22 minutes remaining in regulation to deal the Royals a 1-0 conference setback in St. Paul, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Bethel has collected two of its three wins on its home field. The Royals are sitting at 2-1-1 in four home contests, while going 1-2-1 away from Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
• SLUMPING: After kicking off the season with a 2-0-1 start – beating Northwestern (5-0) and Crown (2-0), and tying Lake Forest (1-1), Bethel has gone 1-3-1 in its last five games — including back-to-back losses to Carleton (6-1) and Macalester (1-0) in their most recent two games.
• SHE SHOOTS AND SCORES: Hannah Kvant has been a scoring machine for the Royals, accounting for nine of the team’s 16 goals through eight games. Malie Beilby and Kelsey Bergan have each chipped in two goals, while Callie Beck, Sonia Meyer, and Abby Swanda own BU’s other three goals. … Kvant has scored in five of the team’s eight games, including a four-goal outburst against Northwestern on Sept. 1.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Bethel’s 12 assists have come from five players — Beilby leads the way with four helpers, with Kvant, Kelsey Bergan, Hailey Bergen, and Jessica Oliver all chipping in two.
• POINT PRODUCTION: With her nine goals and two assists, Kvant leads the team — and the conference — with 20 points, followed by Beilby with eight points (2 G, 4 A) and Kelsey Bergen with six (2 G, 2 A). … Kvant posted a six-point night (2 G, 2 A) against St. Scholastica on Sept. 16 and a season-high eight-point effort (4 G) against Northwestern on Sept. 1.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Kate Green and Izzy Smith have shared the goalkeeping duties with each making four starts. Green has compiled a 1.44 goals-against-average and .800 save percentage in 375:10 minutes, with Smith chipping in a 1.57 GAA and .786 save % in 344:50 minutes. … Green has stopped 24 of the 30 shots she’s faced and Smith has made 22 saves on 28 shots. … Green and Smith both own one shutout this season — Green’s a five-save effort against Crown on Sept. 6 and Smith’s a six-save showing against Northwestern on Sept. 1.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, Bethel has scored 16 goals and added 12 assists I eight games. … Bethel holds a 159-99 advantage in shots attempted this season, including a 90-59 edge in shots on goal. … BU has scored eight goals in the first half and has added eight more after the break. On the flip side, the Royals’ opponents have netted eight of their 12 goals after halftime. … BU has scored a season-high five goals twice this season — beating Northwestern 5-0 on Sept. 1 and stopping St. Scholastica 5-1 on Sept. 16. BU has also recorded season-highs in assists (5) and points (15) against both the Eagles and Saints. … Bethel has been held to one goal or less in all three of its losses and both of its ties.
GRINNELL SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Pioneers head into their weekend games against Illinois College and Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-2-3 overall, including a 2-0-1 mark in their first three Midwest Conference contests.
• LAST TIME OUT: Grinnell scored once in the first half and added two more tallies in the second, as the Pioneers remained unbeaten in Midwest Conference play with a 3-0 win over Ripon in Grinnell, Iowa, last Saturday.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Sunday’s game against Saint Mary’s is the third of five consecutive home games for the Pioneers, who play seven of their final nine games of the 2023 season on their home field. Grinnell is 1-1-1 at home this season, while sporting a 3-1-2 mark away from Springer Field.
• THROWING UP ZEROS: With their 3-0 win over Ripon last Saturday, eight of the Pioneers’ nine games this season have been decided by shutout. Grinnell has blanked the University of Dubuque (2-0), Coe (1-0), Knox (5-0), and Ripon (3-0), while falling to Simpson (2-0) and Carleton (2-0), and tying Luther (0-0) and Central-Iowa (0-0). The only game not decided by shutout was a 1-1 tie against Lake Forest on Sept. 23.
• SHE SHOOTS AND SCORES: Grinnell has gotten goal-scoring production from nine different players, led by Jane March, who owns a team-best three goals. Keiko Smith is second on the squad with two goals, with Tali Berk, Glada Bambi, Katie Carson, Ramona Delborne, Rmma Joshi, and Reese Komsthoeft all netting one goal.
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Berk has accounted for three of the Pioneers’ six assists through nine games, with Amelia Duenas, Gia Sundaram, and Beya VanRheenen all chipping in one helper.
• POINT PRODUCTION: With her team-leading three goals, March sits atop the heap in the team’s points race with six points, one more than Berk (1 G, 3 A) and two up on Smith (2 G).
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Peyton Dixon has played every minute in goal for the Pioneers, compiling a 0.56 goals-against-average and a .907 save percentage. Dixon has stopped 49 of the 54 shots she’s faced and owns six shutouts. … Dixon has made 10 or more saves in a game twice this season, stopping 13 against Carleton on Sept. 9 and adding a season-high 15-save effort against Simpson five days later.
