SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into Saturday’s nonconference match against the University of Dubuque sitting at 3-2 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s went 2-1 in its three nonconference matches at the Green Bay Tennis Center in Green Bay, Wis., last weekend. SMU blanked Lawrence 9-0 and topped Ripon 8-1 in its two Saturday matches, before dropping a heartbreaking 5-4 decision that came down to a 12-10 decision in third set at No. 2 singles the following morning.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After opening the season with back-to-back home matches, Saint Mary’s is in the midst of playing five of six contests on the road — the lone exception, Saturday’s nonconference matchup against the University of Dubuque. … SMU is currently 1-1 on its home courts, while sporting a 2-1 record away from the Winona Tennis Center. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) collected wins in all three of Saint Mary’s matches last week to grab the team lead with four dual-match singles wins, one more than E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.), Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), and Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa). … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row in 2022.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals played six singles matches extended to a third set last weekend against Lawrence, Ripon, and St. Norbert — including three in last Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Green Knights. SMU was 5-1 in those six matches.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Huemoeller posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Raabolle leads the team in doubles wins with four, going 4-1 — including 2-0 partnered with Rodning and 2-1 playing with Stene. … Besek and Rodning are both a perfect 3-0 in doubles play, while Hietala, Huemoeller, Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.), and Stene all own two doubles victories. … Besek/Janssen and Raabolle/Rodning enter Saturday’s match against the University of Dubuque riding two-match winning streaks. … Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) led the Cardinals with 12 doubles wins last season — all at No. 1.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 2-1 showing against Lawrence, Ripon, and St. Norbert last weekend, the Cardinals improved to 74-34 in nonconference play since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE SPARTANS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Spartans head to the Winona Tennis Center for Saturday’s nonconference matchup against Saint Mary’s sitting at 1-3 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: UD split its two nonconference matches last Saturday in Owatonna, Minn., slipping past Concordia 5-4, before dropping a 9-0 decision to Northwestern (Minn.).
• AGAINST THE MIAC: Saturday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the Spartans’ third against teams from the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UD dropped a 6-3 decision to Hamline on Sept. 16, while earning a 5-4 victory over Concordia last Saturday.
• SINGLED OUT: Josh Husemann enters Saturday’s match against Saint Mary’s leading the team with two dual-match singles wins in UD’s first three contests. Rashaun Duck, Bjane Bachmann, Ryan Kiuddle, and Dawson Freese have all recorded on singles victory. … JP Rosaldo, Felipe Biscaro, and Geoffrey Stoughton all recorded four singles wins at last fall’s A-R-C Tournament, with Rosaldo going 4-1, while Biscaro and Stoughton both finished 4-0. … Bachmann, Pedwar Castillo, Duck, and Kiddle have played all four matches this season at Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 singles, respectively, while the Spartans have used three different players at No. 5 and two at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Duck has had a hand in both of UD’s doubles wins this season, teaming with Bachmann to go 1-1 at No. 1 doubles, while joining Kiddle to post a 1-1 mark at No. 2. The Spartans have used three different doubles combinations at No. 3, but have yet to come up with a win (0-4).
