Cardinals dominate UD in 9-0 victory

WINONA, Minn. — It's been two weeks since the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team opened its season with a convincing 9-0 whitewashing of Martin Luther on Jan. 28.

And the Cardinals picked up right where they left off when they returned to action on Saturday, posting their second straight nonconference sweep, this time handing the University of Dubuque a 9-0 drubbing Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.

"It was a good win for the ladies," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg. "I thought we played some very good tennis from top-to-bottom, and learned a few things along the way."

Aided by forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, the Cardinals dominated the Spartas from start to finish in rolling to win No. 2 on the season.

Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Min.) and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.) and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) added an 8-1 win at No. 2 to give SMU a quick, 3-0 lead after doubles play.

And in singles, Renwick, Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) all delivered 6-0, 6-0 wins, while Dosser won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and Becker collected a 6-4, 7-5 win in her first appearance at No. 1.

The Cardinals (2-0 overall) are back in action next weekend with three matches in three days. SMU will take on Northwestern (6:30 p.m.) on Friday evening in White Bear Lake, Minn., on Friday, before kicking off conference play with back-to-back matches against MIAC powers Gustavus on Saturday and Carleton on Sunday. Saturday's match at Gustavus will begin at 1 p.m., while Sunday's home contest against the Knights is set for a 4:30 p.m. start.
