SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals — coming off an 11-8 season in 2022 — head into Saturday’s matchup against the University of Dubuque sitting at 1-0 overall, thanks to a 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. Jan. 28.
• LAST TIME OUT: Saint Mary’s dropped just one game in its three doubles matches against Martin Luther and collected five straight-set singles wins in rolling to a 9-0 nonconference win over the Knights.
• DOMINANCE: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• WINNING BIG: Six of SMU’s last 12 wins have been 9-0 sweeps, while three other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.), who closed out the 2022 season leading the Cardinals with 13 dual-match singles wins, posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28. … Renwick put together a season-high six-match winning streak a year ago — the longest among Cardinal players — while Henderson and Becker each boasted five-match win streaks.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: Four of the six singles matches in SMU’s 8-1 loss to Saint Benedict last season were stretched to a third set, including a 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 win by Peterson at No. 1. The other two singles matches vs. the Blazers included a first-set tiebreaker.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Dosser/Henderson and Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.)/Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.) posted 8-0 wins over Martin Luther in the team’s Jan. 28 season-opener, while Becker/Renwick were 8-1 winners. … Henderson and Dosser combined to post a team-high seven doubles wins last year, one more than Peterson/Kennedy Morgan. … Individually, Dosser and Henderson each had a hand in a team-high 10 doubles-wins last season, followed by Peterson with nine.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals, who played their first seven matches on their home court a year ago, are 7-4 in their last 11 home matches, while going 5-4 away from the Winona Tennis Center. … SMU has now picked up 11 of its last 15 wins at the Winona Tennis Center.
• PROGRAM FIRSTS: The Cardinals’ spring trip matches against Calvin, Houghton, Piedmont and Mount Vernon Nazarene last season were all the first meetings in program history.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther, the Cardinals improved to 74-22 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
UNIVERSITY OF DUBUQUE SPARTANS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Spartans closed out the fall portion of their schedule still searching for their first victory, going 0-13, including 0-8 in American Rivers Conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: UD has been off since Oct. 11, 2022, when they dropped a 9-0 decision to Loras in its final dual match of the 2022 fall season.
• TOUGH END: The Spartans closed out the 2021-22 season dropping its last 12 contests — including 7-0 and 9-0 decisions to Wisconsin Lutheran and Grand View in its two 2022 spring matches.
• SINGLED OUT: Hayden Warner and Alyssa Stevenson accounted for 10 of the Spartans’ 11 singles wins during their fall season, with Warner collecting six wins in 11 contests, while Stevenson chipped in four. … Warner played all 11 matches at No. 1 singles, with Stevenson matching that feat at No. 2. … As a team, UD finished 11-38 in singles play last fall.
• DOUBLING UP: Stevenson and Warner teamed up to collect two of Dubuque’s four doubles wins — both at No. 1 — while Abby Drost had a hand in UD’s other two wins, teaming with Warner for one and Teliana Ptaszek for the other. … UD closed out the fall portion of its schedule 4-29 in doubles play.… The Spartans used three different doubles combinations at both No. 1 and No. 2 last fall.
