ST. PETER, Minn. – The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team had no answer for the firepower that stood across the net Saturday afternoon.
Gustavus — owners of the last 33 consecutive conference regular-season champion — was in prime form for its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown against Saint Mary's Saturday afternoon, dealing the Cardinals a 9-0 setback.
GAC — which has now posted six 9-0 victories in six NCAA Division III matches — was near-perfect in the doubles competition, dropping just two games en route to 8-0, 8-1, 8-1 wins and a quick, 3-0 lead.
It was more of the same in singles, as the Gusties rolled to six straight-set wins.
Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss at No. 1 singles, and was the only Cardinal to win more than one game in a set against the vaunted GAC lineup.
The Cardinals (0-3 MIAC, 4-4 overall) are back in action next weekend, playing host to Loras on Friday and Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, with both matches held at the Winona Tennis Center.
