SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into this weekend’s match against Bethany Lutheran sitting at 4-4 overall, including 0-1 in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals dropped a pair of road matches last weekend, falling to Northwestern (Minn.) 6-3 on Friday in White Bear Lake, Minn., before coming up empty in a 9-0 conference loss to defending MIAC champion Gustavus the following afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.
• HOME SWEET HOME: Saint Mary’s heads into its two home matches this weekend having played five of their first eight contests on the road. … SMU is currently 2-1 on its home courts, while sporting a 2-3 record away from the Winona Tennis Center. … Five of the Cardinals’ six wins in 2022 came on the road.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) collected one of SMU’s three singles matches against Northwestern (Minn.) on Feb. 18 to push his team-leading dual-match win total to six — including wins in five of his last six outings. … Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa) is second to Stene with five singles wins, followed by E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.) and Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) with four each. … Hietala and Stene closed out the 2022 campaign owning a team-leading 11 dual-match singles wins. … Stene put together a team-high six-match winning streak last season, while Hietala and Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) both won five singles matches in a row.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had 10 singles contests extended to a third set this season — including three in nonconference losses at Northwestern (Minn.) on Feb. 17 and at St. Norbert on Feb. 5.. … SMU is 7-3 in those seven three-set matches. … SMU closed out the 2022 season owning a 22-23 mark in its 45 three-setters.
• CAREER FIRSTS: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Min.) posted a 7-5, 7-6 (4) win against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 in his first appearance at No. 1 singles. … Rodning’s 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles against Martin Luther on Jan. 28 was his first collegiate singles victory.
• DOUBLING UP: Raabolle leads the team in doubles wins with five, going 5-2 — including 3-0 partnered with Rodning and 2-1 playing with Stene. … Besek and Janssen are a perfect 4-0 when paired together. … Janssen/Brandon Kurilla (Hastings, Minn.) led the Cardinals with 12 doubles wins last season — all at No. 1.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 20 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history.
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 6-3 loss to Northwestern on Feb. 17, the Cardinals moved to 75-35 in nonconference play since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
BETHANY LUTHERAN VIKINGS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Vikings head into the weekend sitting at 2-1 on the season, sandwiching 5-4 wins over Wartburg and Cornell around a 7-2 loss to Hamline.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Vikings jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches in its nonconference showdown against Cornell on Sept. 11, and split the six singles matches en route to a 5-4 victory.
• SINGLED OUT: Marcos Borobia Arias has accounted for one-third of the Vikings’ singles wins this season, going 3-1. Stepan Chernegov and Heitor Damaso are second to Arias with two singles wins, while Antonio Coello and Caike Ribeiro own BLC’s other two victories. … As a team, BLC is 9-15 in singles play — going 3-1 at No. 1; 2-2 at Nos. 2 and 3; 1-3 at Nos. 4 and 5; while still searching for its first win at No. 6 (0-4).
• DOUBLING UP: Arias has had a hand in three of Bethany Lutheran’s five doubles victories, teaming with Damasio to go 3-1 at No. 1 doubles. Chernegov and Kyle Deyo own BLC’s other two doubles wins, posting a 2-0 mark at No. 3. … As a team, the Vikings are 5-7 in doubles play – going 3-1 at No. 1 and 2-2 at No. 3, while winless (0-4) at No., 2.
