WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team rallied from a 2-1 deficit with victories in four of the six singles matches, as the Cardinals posted their second conference win, beating Hamline 5-4 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"What a great effort," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The guys just gutted it out. They were down 2-1 after doubles and just found a way to win. It was a tremendous performance, and a great win."
Â
E.J. Hietala (Duluth, Minn.)/
Josh Janssen (Green Bay, Wis.) picked up Saint Mary's lone win in doubles, posting an 8-7 (4) marathon victory at No. 1, but the Cardinals turned up the heat in the six singles contests.
Â
Janssen,
Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.), and
Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) each recorded straight-set singles wins, and Hietala added a three-set, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-4 win at No. 2 to complete the come-from-behind victory.
Â
The Cardinals (2-4 MIAC, 9-7 overall) are now off until next Saturday, when they return to the Winona Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. conference matchup against Macalester.
