WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis put up a fight Saturday afternoon, but the Cardinals just did not have enough firepower to bring down Macalester, as the Scots dealt SMU a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.
Â
"The ladies played a tough Macalester team and really played some good tennis," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "(The Scots) are an excellent team with great depth and we gave them everything we had. Hats off to Macalester on a well-played match."
Â
The Scots took a 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, but it was anything but easy, winning 8-4, 8-3, and 8-7 (7).
Â
Macalester then completed the sweep with wins in all six singles matches. SMU;s
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) rallied from a set down to force a decisive third set at No. 3, but came up short in falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
Â
The Cardinals (1-6, MIAC, 6-8 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, returning to the Winona Tennis Center for a 1:30 p.m. conference showdown against St. Catherine.
