SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their weekend matchups against Macalester at St. Catherine sitting at 6-7 overall, including a 1-5 showing through six conference matches.
• LAST TIME OUT: The Cardinals picked up their first win of the MIAC season with a thrilling, 5-4 victory over Hamline last Saturday at the Winona Tennis Center.
• NAILBITERS: Two of Saint Mary’s last three matches have been decided by a 5-4 outcome. SMU dropped a 5-4 decision to Concordia on March 18, before delivering a 5-4 victory over Hamline seven days later.
• WINNING BIG: Eight of SMU’s last 17 wins have been 9-0 sweeps — including three of SMU’s five victories this season — while four other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• IN THE FALL: Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) collected singles wins at the Gustavus Fall Invitational in late September, while Dosser/Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Henderson/Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) earned doubles victories.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) enters the weekend’s matches against Macalester and St. Catherine leading the Cardinals in dual-match singles wins with eight, one more than Becker, and two up on Renwick and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.). … Renwick put together a season-high six-match winning streak a year ago — the longest among Cardinal players — while Henderson and Becker each boasted five-match win streaks.
• WIN NO. 1: Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) picked up her first collegiate singles victory last Saturday against Bethany Lutheran, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
• MIXING THINGS UP: The Cardinals have used at least two different players at all six singles positions this season. Two different SMU players have competed at No. 1 singles, while three have competed from the No. 2 and No. 3 slots, and four have lined up in the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 positions.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles teams of Dosser/Henderson — SMU’s only doubles combination to play all 13 matches together — has teamed up to record a team-leading seven doubles wins, two more than Becker/Renwick. … Becker has played all 13 matches at No. 2 doubles, going 5-6 with Renwick and 2-0 with Boomgaarden. … SMU has used 10 different doubles combinations this season. … As a team, the Cardinals are 19-20 in doubles play — going 7-6 at No. 1 and No. 2, and 5-8 at No. 3.
• HOME SWEET HOME: With their 5-4 win over Hamline on March 25, the Cardinals improved to 10-6 in their last 16 home matches — including 4-2 this season. … SMU has picked up 14 of its last 20 wins at the Winona TC.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• DOMINATION: With their Feb. 25 win over Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals improved to 10-0 all-time against the Vikings — with all 10 matches ending in 9-0 sweeps.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Thanks to their spring-trip victories over Adrian and Albion, the Cardinals improved to 78-21 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
• NEW THIS YEAR: The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III Operating Committee has instituted a mandatory, no-ad scoring pilot for all of D-III tennis for the 2022-23 season. No-ad tennis matches are played as follows: If each player/team has won three points, the score is “Deuce” and a deciding point shall be played. The receiver(s) shall choose whether to receive the service from the right half or the left half of the court. In doubles, the players of the receiving team cannot change positions to receive this deciding point. The player/team who wins the deciding point wins the game.
