MORRIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's women's soccer team's offense was in mid-season form on Friday, as the Cardinals — kicking off the 2023 season with a nonconference game at UMN Morris — got goals from six different players in cruising to a 6-0 victory.
Saint Mary's did not waste any time taking complete control against the Cougars, scoring the game-opening goal just seven minutes in — and adding two more late in the half — to take a 3-0 cushion into the halftime intermission.
Genesis Capacio (Las Vegas, Nev.) got the ball rolling for Saint Mary's, netting the season's first goal off an assist from
Lauren Ashe (Beaverton, Ore.). By the time the half ended.
Lauryn Skoruppa (Littleton, Colo.), and
Samantha Munson (Plain City, Utah) had also found the back of the net for a three-goal SMU advantage.
And the halftime break did nothing to cool off the red-hot SMU offense, as
Brooklyn McKinney (Thornton, Colo.),
Hannah Bradley (Portland, Ore.), and
Dakota Leonard (Lincolnshire, Ill.) all picked up their first goals of the season — in the first 10 minutes of the second frame.
Along with her first-half goal, Munson also collected a pair of assists en route to her first collegiate multiple-point game, while Bradley's first-half tally was the first of her collegiate career.
Saint Mary's finished with a 38-8 edge in shots — including 21-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Anna Peckosh (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) stopped the lone shot she faced in the game's first 54 minutes, with
Megan Nadal (Chino, Calif.) making one save in 36 minutes of relief.
Saint Mary's (1-0-0 overall) is back in action on Sunday, when the Cardinals kick off the home portion of their schedule with an 11 a.m. nonconference matchup against Wartburg.
