SAINT MARY’S CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference-opener at Augsburg sporting a 3-1-1 record through five games.
• LAST TIME OUT: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) scored with 20 minutes remaining in regulation, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1, nonconference win over Simpson last Saturday in Indianola, Iowa.
• ON A ROLL: The Cardinals head into their conference-opener against Augsburg riding a two-game winning streak — beating both Bethany Lutheran and Simpson by identical 2-1 counts.
• HOME SWEET HOME: SMU has picked up four of its last six wins on its home field. The Cardinals are 2-0-0 on their home turf this season.
• LETTING ONE IN: The Cardinals surrendered their first goal of the season in the 12th minute Monday against Marian, snapping SMU’s shutout streak at 192:14.
• CLOSE CALLS: Twenty-five of the Cardinals’ last 35 games have been decided by one goal or less — including four of SMU’s five games this season, and nine of the Cardinals’ 17 contests in 2022.
• FIT TO BE TIED: For the second year in a row, the Cardinals have played to a scoreless tie this season. Saint Mary’s and Wisconsin Lutheran battled to a scoreless deadlock on Sept. 3. … The Cardinals’ three ties last season — including a 0-0 deadlock against Concordia on Oct. 1 — were the most since the 2015 season, when Saint Mary’s finished the year with three ties en route to a 6-9-3 overall record.
• OFF AND RUNNING: With their 4-0 victory over Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight season-openers, the lone blemish a 3-0 loss to the University of Dubuque a year ago, and a 1-1 tie with St. Olaf during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
• CAREER GAMES: Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and Aidan Adamek (Missoula, Mont.) each scored their first — and second — collegiate goals in SMU’s season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1. … Adamek followed that up with his team-leading third goal of the season in the fourth minute against Marian on Sept. 3.
• CAREER GAMES II: Rojan Monger (St. Paul, Minn.) netted his first collegiate goal in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win over Bethany Lutheran last Wednesday, while Diego Giles (Columbia Heights, Minn.) scored his first goal as a Cardinal against Simpson three days later.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: Adamek and Hare share the team lead with three goals each, while Monger, Giles and Jack Hurley (Homewood, Ill.) own SMU’s other three goals.
• LENDING A HAND: Along with his three goals, Hare has also assisted on all three of Adamek’s goals, while Monger, Giles, Barick Makabi (Iowa City, Iowa) and Martin Garr (Monticello, Minn.) have also collected helpers this season.
• POINT PRODUCER: With his three goals and three assists, Hare sits atop the Cardinals’ points lead with nine, already surpassing Cerim Palislamovic’s (Jacksonville, Fla.) team-leading eight points (3 G, 2 A) from a year ago. Adamek is second on the squad with six points (3 G), followed by Monger (1 G, 1 A) and Giles (1 G, 1 A) with three points each..
• PLENTY OF PKs: With his PK goal against Bethany Lutheran last Wednesday, Hurley has now accounted for four of SMU’s last five penalty-kick goals, having gone 3-for-4 on PK attempts a year ago. … Hurley’s four career PK goals put him tied with Eli Szymanski for more in program history.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.), who started 16 of the team’s 18 games in goal for the Cardinals a year ago — has started all five games this season, compiling a 0.89 goals-against-average and an .800 save percentage. … Sessler led the MIAC in saves last season with 119, and has stopped 16 of the 20 shots he’s faced this season.
• SHUTTING THEM OUT: Sessler’s seven-save shutout against Wisconsin Lutheran on Sept. 3 was the fourth of his collegiate career. The senior had one shutout in each of his first three seasons — including a 12-save performance in blanking Concordia on Oct. 1, 2022.
• BUSY NIGHTS: Sessler made 10 or more saves four times in 2022, including equaling his career-high of 12 saves three times. … Sessler has stopped 12 shots in a game four times over his collegiate career.
• POST-SEASON HONORS: Sessler was named honorable-mention All-MIAC a year ago, after leading the league in saves with 119.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 4-0 win against Martin Luther on Sept. 1, the Cardinals are now a perfect 8-0-0 all-time against Martin Luther, and have outscored the Knights 30-2 in those eight meetings. … Saint Mary’s five goals in last year’s 5-2 win over the Knights were a season high — and the most goals scored in a game since netting five against MLC in a 5-0 win in 2021.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: The Cardinals have scored six of their nine goals this season in the first half. SMU’s opponents, meanwhile, have netted three of their four goals in the second half. … Saint Mary’s has attempted 50 shots in five games, including 23 on goal, while the Cardinals’ opponents have taken 65 shots, with 21 reaching their target. … SMU netted a season-high four goals in its season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther on Sept. 1.
AUGSBURG AUGGIES SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Auggies head into Saturday’s evening showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 4-0-1 overall, including a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.
• LAST TIME OUT: Augsburg erupted for five goals in the game’s first 33 minutes in coasting to a 5-1 win over Hamline in the teams’ conference opener last Wednesday in St. Paul, Minn.
• NEAR-PERFECT START: The Auggies are riding a season-opening five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) and a four-game winning streak entering Saturday’s matchup against Saint Mary’s. Augsburg opened the season with a 2-2 tie against Linfield, before rattling off wins over George Fox (3-1), Northwestern (4-1), UMN Morris (10-0), and Hamline (5-1).
• ROAD WARRIORS: Augsburg has played four of its first five games on the road, the lone home contest a 4-1 win over Northwestern (Minn.) on Sept. 5.
• HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE: The Auggies have outscored their first five opponents 24-5, including 15-1 over its last two games.
• HE SHOOTS, AND SCORES: Augsburg has gotten goals from 10 different players this season, led by Kebba Janneh, who leads the team with six goals in five games. Mitchel Munzing is second on the squad with four goals, followed by Owen Salzwedel and Jeffrey Richter with three each. … Janneh has scored I four of the Auggies’ five games, including two-goal games against both Linfield and UMN Morris. …
• LENDING A HELPING HAND: Mizael Harris boasts a team-high seven assists, while nine other Auggies have delivered at least one helper. Janneh and Munzing are second to Harris with four assists each, with Remus Repcak sitting fourth on the team with three. … Harris has collected five assists in Augsburg’s last two games — picked up two assists vs. UMN Morris and three vs. Hamline.
• POINT PRODUCTION: The Auggies have three players who have already chalked up more than 10 points this season. Janneh sits atop the Augsburg points race with 16, followed by Munzing with 12 and Harris with 11.
• BETWEEN THE PIPES: Oscar Herrera has played every minute of the Auggies’ first five games in goal, compiling a 1.00 goals-against-average and a .643 save percentage. … Herrera has stopped nine of the 14 shots he’s faced and owns one shutout. … Herrera has made a season-high three saves twice.
