RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team kicked off its season in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals cruised to an 8-1 nonconference win over UW-River Falls.
"It was a great performance top-to-bottom," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "The ladies played very well — it was a great start to our season."
Saint Mary's came out on fire, sweeping the three doubles matches —
Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) and
Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) combined for an 8-2 win at No. 1, while
Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.)/
Elena Ruzevich (Chicago, Ill.) and
Emily Dondelinger (Bemidji, Minn.)/
Lillian Kimber (Duluth, Minn.) each posted 8-5 victories.
Singles proved to be a little more difficult for the Cardinals, as Boomgaarden and Dondelinger both needed three sets to pick up wins at No. 2 and No. 3, while
Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) added a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5.
The Cardinals (1-0 overall) are now off until Jan. 27, 2024, when they play host to Marin Luther in a 3:30 p.m. nonconference match.
