SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals closed out their 2023 season sitting at 6-11 overall, including a 1-9 showing through nine conference matches.
• WINNING BIG: Eight of SMU’s last 17 wins have been 9-0 sweeps — including three of SMU’s six victories in 2023 — while four other victories over the last two seasons have been by 8-1 counts.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Cardinals are 10-8 in their last 18 home matches — including 4-4 in 2023. … SMU has picked up 14 of its last 20 wins at the Winona TC.
• FALCON DOMINANCE: Saint Mary’s heads into its season-opener against UW-River Falls having faced the Falcons 19 times since 1997 — winning all 19 contests.
• NEW TERRITORY: The Cardinals’ September showdown with UW-River Falls marks the first time in head coach Jeff Halberg’s 25-year tenure that SMU has played a dual match in the Fall of the academic year.
• LEADING THE CHARGE: Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) led the Cardinals in dual-match singles wins with eight, one more than Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.), and two up on Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) and Ella Boomgaarden (St. Peter, Minn.).
• WIN NO. 1: Kathryn Stiegel (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) picked up her first collegiate singles victory on Feb. 25, 2023 against Bethany Lutheran, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6.
• MIXING THINGS UP: The Cardinals used at least two different players at all six singles positions in 2023. Two different SMU players competed at No. 1 singles, while four competed from the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 slots, and five lined up in the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
• DOUBLING UP: The doubles tandem of Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.)/Henderson teamed up to record a team-leading seven doubles wins, two more than Becker/Renwick. … Becker played 15 of SMU’s 17 matches at No. 2 doubles, going 5-6 with Renwick and 2-2 with Boomgaarden. … SMU used 14 different doubles combinations. … As a team, the Cardinals went 19-32 in doubles play — going 7-10 at No. 1 and No. 2, and 5-12 at No. 3.
• STREAKING ALONG: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther on Jan. 28, 2023, the Cardinals ran their winning streak over the Knights to 17. SMU is 18-1 overall against MLC — and have won the last nine meetings between the two teams by 9-0 counts. … Saint Mary’s has dropped just one game in its six doubles matches against the Knights over the last two years.
• DOMINATION: With their Feb. 25, 2023 win over Bethany Lutheran, the Cardinals improved to 10-0 all-time against the Vikings — with all 10 matches ending in 9-0 sweeps.
• TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS: Thanks to their spring-trip victories over Adrian and Albion, the Cardinals improved to 78-21 against nonconference opponents since 2012.
UW-RIVER FALLS SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Falcons head into their nonconference match against Saint Mary’s still searching for their first win of the season, sitting at 0-2 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: UW-River Falls dropped a pair of 9-0 decisions to kick off the season last weekend, falling to UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater.
• LIMPING IN: With their two losses to open the season last weekend, the Falcons have now dropped five straight, dating back to a 6-3 WIAC win over UW-Stout on Oct. 8, 2022. … UW-RF’s win over UW-Stout on Oct. 8 snapped its season-opening six-match losing streak.
• SINGLED OUT: Karyn Duddeck and Kaytlyn Syverson shared the team lead in singles wins last season with three each, while Kailey Courteau chipped in two singles victories and Chloe Struss had one. The quartet were the only Falcons with singles wins last season. … Syverson (No. 4) and Grace Aerts (No. 6) were the only Falcons to play all 10 matches at the same singles position a year ago.
• DOUBLING UP: Kennedy Zeifer finished with a team-leading three doubles wins last season, one more than Courteau, Duddeck, and Syverson. … UW-River Falls used at least two different combinations at all three doubles positions.
• CRUNCHING THE NUMBERS: As a team, UW-River Falls has gone 9-63 in singles play in its last 12 matches, while sporting a 5-31 mark in doubles play. … Nine of UW-River Falls last 12 losses have been by 9-0 counts — including four of the Falcons’ last five setbacks.
