FOND DU LAC, Wis. — After going nearly 160 minutes without scoring a goal, the Saint Mary's University men's soccer team regained some offensive mojo Monday evening against Marian.
The Cardinals — who went the final 68:19 of their season-opening 4-0 win over Martin Luther and all 90:00 of a 0-0 stalemate against Wisconsin Lutheran two days later — did not waste any time getting on the board against the Sabres, scoring just 4:22 into the first half.
Problem was, Marian would also strike early, netting the equalizer in the 12th minute — and added a penalty-kick goal with just 5:01 remaining in regulation to give the Sabres a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's.
Aidan Adamek (Missoula, Mont.) needed less than five minutes to net his team-leading third goal of the season, taking a feed from
Cohan Hare (New Richmond, Wis.) and beating Marian goalkeeper Aden Jerome to give SMU an early 1-0 lead.
Giuliano Corazzina pulled the Sabres even, beating SMU goalkeeper
Daniel Sessler (Brookfield, Ill.) to the lower left side in the 12th minute.
It appeared as if the Cardinals were headed to their second straight tie, only to have Marian awarded a penalty kick, which Loga Holevas deposited just under the crossbar to Sessler's left to give the Sabres the lead for good.
The Cardinals (1-1-1 overall) are right back in action on Wednesday, when they return home to Ochrymowycz Field for a 7 p.m. nonconference game against Bethany Lutheran.
