SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their three spring trip matches against Adrian, King’s, and Albion sitting at 4-5 overall, while sporting an 0-2 mark in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: The Cardinals played a pair of matches decided by 9-0 outcomes — sweeping past Crown 9-0 on Feb. 16, before falling to MIAC powerhouse Gustavus by the same count the following afternoon.
• ROAD WARRIORS: Saint Mary’s is in the midst of playing eight of nine matches on the road — the lone home contest, SMU’s 9-0 loss to Gustavus on Feb. 17. … SMU is currently 1-4 on their home courts, while going 3-1 away from the Winona Tennis Center this season.
• IN THE FALL: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals at the 2023 ITA Regional/Midwest Open last September, collecting a pair of singles wins en route to reaching the ITA consolation semifinals. … Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.), Michael Johnson (Hastings, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), and Zak Farley (Sartell, Minn.) all picked up one singles victory at the Midwest Open.
• SINGLED OUT: Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.) comes into spring break owning a team-best six singles wins, one more than Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.). Raabolle is third on the team with four singles victories, while Huemoeller and Apel both have three. … Stene closed out 2023 with a team-leading 12 singles wins.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had seven singles matches extended to a third-set super-breaker this season, with SMU going 3-4 in those seven contests. … Saint Mary’s had 25 singles contests extended to a third set in 2023 — including three each in matches against Saint John’s, Northwestern (Minn.) and St. Norbert. … SMU was 14-11 in its three-set matches last season and with its 2-3 mark this year, are now 38-37 in three-setters over the last three seasons.
• FIT TO BE TIE(BREAKERED): Saint Mary’s had five of its 13 singles sets in its 7-2 win over Lawrence on Feb. 9 decided by a tie-breaker — including a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) loss by Besek at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Huemoeller and Raabolle have teamed up to record a team-high four doubles wins, going 4-3 at No. 1. … Rodning and Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) have collected a pair of wins as a doubles combo en route to a 2-2 showing, while seven different doubles combinations have accounted for SMU’s other four wins. … Individually, Raabolle and Huemoeller lead the team with five doubles wins each, one more than Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa), and two up on Smiley, while Apel, Besek, Stene, and Johnson all own two doubles victories.…. Raabolle led the team in doubles wins with nine last season, going 9-9 — including 6-5 partnered with Rodning.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther in their season opener on Jan. 27, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 21 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history. …
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 4-3 start in nonconference play this season, the Cardinals are now 82-40 in non-MIAC matches since 2012.
ADRIAN SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Bulldogs head into their spring trip sitting at 4-5 overall.
• LAST TIME OUT: Adrian has not played yet in the spring, closing out its nine-match fall schedule with an 8-1 victory over Indiana University Southeast on Oct. 7 in Adrian, Mich.
• HOME SWEET HOME: The Bulldogs have played six of their nine matches this season on their home courts. Adrian is sitting at 3-3 at home, while going 1-2 away from the Craft Tennis Complex.
• SINGLED OUT: Kasper Olofsson and Brandon Falk share the team lead with four singles victories this season, followed by Luca Coutinho, Luke Holowinski, and Sean Ruhl with three each. … Adrian has gotten at least one singles win from seven different players. … Adrian has had at least two individuals play in each singles position — including four at No. 2 and No. 6 and five at No. 3, 4, and 5. … As a team, Adrian is 20-31 in singles play this season.
• DOUBLING UP: Ruhl and Jackson Wilcox have teamed up to win a team-high four doubles matches, going 4-3 overall. … Olofsson has one a pair of doubles matches paired with both Falk and Coutinho. … Individually, Wilcox, Olofsson, and Ruhl have all picked up four doubles wins, one more than both Coutinho and Falk. … Adrian has used eight different doubles combinations. … As a team, the Bulldogs are 10-15 in doubles play.
KING’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Monarchs enter spring trip play sporting an 0-1 record, having three of its four matches last fall canceled or postponed.
• LAST TIME OUT: Patrick Pech had a hand in two of King’s three wins in the Monarchs’ 6-3 loss to SUNY Oneonta in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., on Oct. 15, 2023.
• HITTING THE ROAD: King’s match against Trine on Monday in Orlando, Fla., kicks off a stretch of six straight road contests for the Monarchs. After five spring trip matches in Florida, the Monarchs head to Williamsport, Pa., for a matchup against Penn College on March 16, before returning home to face Clarks Summit on March 21.
• SINGLED OUT: Pech owns King’s lone dual-match singles win, while collecting three wins at the King’s Invitational on Sept. 15-16, and boasts a perfect 4-0 overall singles record. … John Toussaint also owns four overall singles wins — all coming at the King’s Invitational, where he finished 4-1. … Toussaint closed out 2023 with a team-best 12 singles victories, two more than Pech.
• DOUBLING UP: The teams of Toussaint/Logan Gregory and Pech/Aidan Temple picked up the Monarchs’ two doubles wins against Oneonta on Oct. 15. The two doubles teams also collected a win at last Fall’s King’s Invitational to lead the team with two overall doubles victories. … Gregory/Toussaint paired up for a team-leading 10 doubles victories in 2023 — all coming at No. 1 doubles.
ALBION SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Britons enter their spring trip owning a 2-4 overall record through their first six matches of the season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Albion came up empty against Spring Arbor (Mich.) last Wednesday, dropping a 9-0 decision.
• HITTING THE ROAD: After five consecutive home matches, Albion will play three straight neutral-site contests against Wentworth Institute of Technology, Concordia (Wis.), and Saint Mary’s during its spring trip, before returning home ot Albion, Mich., to face Hope College on March 23.
• SINGLED OUT: Five of Albion’s six singles players have collected a team-leading two singles victories this season. Along with two wins from Brendan Morrison, Drake Malcolm, Josh Doyle, Jacob Doyle, and Jacob Kubiak, Albion’s other singles win came from Peyton Bell.
• DOUBLING UP: Jacob Doyle and Josh Doyle share the team lead in doubles wins with seven, one more than Morrison and two in front of both Malcolm and Kubiak.
