SAINT MARY’S SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Cardinals head into their conference match against Macalester sitting at 5-11 overall, while sporting an 0-6 mark in conference play.
• LAST ACTION: Saint Mary’s dropped a pair of MIAC contests last weekend, falling to St. Scholastica 8-1 at the Winona Tennis Center on Saturday, before suffering a 7-2 setback at the hands of Hamline at InnerCity Tennis Center in Minneapolis, Minn., the following day.
• HITTING THE ROAD: Beginning with Thursday’s match at Macalester, Saint Mary’s will close out its regular-season schedule playing two of its final three contests away from the Winona Tennis Center — the lone home contest coming against Saint John’s on April 19. … SMU is 1-6 in its seven home matches this season, while going 4-5 away from the Winona TC.
• IN THE FALL: Evan Huemoeller (Owatonna, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals at the 2023 ITA Regional/Midwest Open last September, collecting a pair of singles wins en route to reaching the ITA consolation semifinals. … Philip Apel (North Oaks, Minn.), Michael Johnson (Hastings, Minn.), Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.), and Zak Farley (Sartell, Minn.) all picked up one singles victory at the Midwest Open.
• SINGLED OUT: Matt Besek (Winona, Minn.) heads into Thursday’s match against Macalester boasting a team-high eight singles wins, one more than Tucker Stene (Fridley, Minn.), followed by Apel with six and Trevor Smiley (Minnetonka, Minn.) with five. … Huemoeller has played all 16 matches at No. 1 singles and is the only Cardinal to have played every match at the same position. … Saint Mary’s is 39-57 in singles play this season.
• GOING THE DISTANCE: The Cardinals have had 21 singles matches extended to a third-set super-breaker this season, with SMU going 11-10 in those 21 contests. … SMU had four of its six singles matches against Albion on March 6 extended to a third set, with the Cardinals going 3-1 in those four contests. … Saint Mary’s had 25 singles contests go to a third set in 2023 — including three each in matches against Saint John’s, Northwestern (Minn.) and St. Norbert — and finished 14-11 in those 25 three-setters.
• FIT TO BE TIE(BREAKERED): Saint Mary’s had five of its 13 singles sets in its 7-2 win over Lawrence on Feb. 9 decided by a tie-breaker — including a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) loss by Besek at No. 6.
• DOUBLING UP: Huemoeller and Brendon Raabolle (Andover, Minn.) have teamed up to record a team-high five doubles wins, going 5-5 at No. 1. … The doubles teams of Caden Rodning (Mason City, Iowa)/Smiley, Rodning/Besek, and Johnson/Stene have all collected a pair of wins as a doubles combos. … Individually, Raabolle owns a team-best seven wins in doubles play, one more than Huemoeller and two up on Rodning. … As a team, SMU is 17-31 in doubles action this season. … Raabolle led the team in doubles wins with nine last season, going 9-9 — including 6-5 partnered with Rodning.
• TOTAL DOMINATION: With their 9-0 win over Martin Luther in their season opener on Jan. 27, the Cardinals pushed their winning streak to 21 straight against the Knights. SMU has never lost to Martin Luther in program history. …
• OUT OF THEIR LEAGUE: With their 5-5 record in nonconference play this season, the Cardinals are now 83-42 in non-MIAC matches since 2012.
MACALESTER SCOUTING REPORT:
• FOR THE RECORD: The Scots head into their mid-week conference showdown against Saint Mary’s sitting at 5-6 overall, including owning a 2-1 record through their first three matches of the MIAC season.
• LAST TIME OUT: Playing their first match since beating Western Connecticut 9-0 on March 14, the Scots picked up right where they left off, jumping out to a 2-1 lead after doubles and claiming wins in four of the six singles matches to top Concordia 6-3 last Saturday in Fargo, N.D.
• HOME SWEET HOME: After seven consecutive road contests, Thursday’s match against Saint Mary’s is the first of four straight home contests for the Scots. Macalester is 2-2 on its home courts this season, while going 3-4 on the road.
• ON A ROLL: With their 6-3 win over Macalester last Saturday, the Scots pushed their winning streak to three in a row. The Scots have knocked off Roger Williams (7-2), Western Connecticut (9-0), and Concordia (6-3) during its current three-match run.
• SINGLED OUT: Kevin Mortimer leads the Scots with six singles wins, two more than Lucas Wood and three up on Jordan Doi. … Macalester has gotten at least one singles win from six of the seven players who have competed in singles play this season. … Mortimer and Wood both head into Macalester’s match against Saint Mary’s riding three-match winning streaks. … The Scots are 18-24 in singles play this season.
• DOUBLING UP: Mortimer and Owen Lindstrom have teamed up to post a team-leading three doubles wins, while Doi/Wood are second with two wins and Doi/Liam Lynch have the other Scot doubles victory. … Individually, Doi, Lindstrom, and Mortimer share the top spot with three wins each, followed by Wood with two and Lynch with one. … As a team, Macalester is 6-15 in doubles action.
