Match Summary vs. Bemidji State
WINONA, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg was worried about a letdown after Saturday's hard-fought, 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Bethel, his Cardinals quickly put those fears to rest.
The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches and never looked back Sunday afternoon, cruising to a 6-3 nonconference victory over Bemidji State at the Winona Indoor Tennis Center.
“It was good to see us come right back and play well again after (Saturday's) match against Bethel,” said Halberg. “We got off to a good start by sweeping the three doubles matches and just never let up.
“Bemidji put up a heck of a fight in the singles portion, but in the end we were able to come away with another solid win.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) collected wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the second day in a row, dropping BSU's Nicole Christiansen 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, then teaming with
Courtney Spartz (Western Springs, Ill.) for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles.
Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis.) was also a double winner vs. the Beavers, outlasting BSU's Julie Kapsner 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 at No. 4 singles, then hooking up with
Toni Troumbly (Bovey, Minn.) for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.
Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) collected the Cardinals' other singles win, a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 6, while
Sara Clements (La Crosse, Wis.) and
Brianna Placek (Greendale, Wis.) added an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Cardinals, who improve to 4-7 overall, are back in action Saturday, taking on Maryville College in a nonconference match in Knoxville, Tenn., as part of SMU's spring trip.
