NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's soccer team, coming off a 3-1 conference-opening loss to Bethel, hits the road Saturday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. MIAC game against Carleton.

Last Action: The Cardinals gave up a penalty kick goal 11 minutes into the first half and were never able to recover, as Bethel handed SMU a 3-1 setback in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Tuesday evening at Ochrymowycz Field. Carleton, meanwhile, saw its conference record dip to 1-1, falling at home to Gustavus 2-1 on Wednesday.

Last Meeting — Wednesday, October 8, 2008: Carleton, ranked eighth in the country at the time, pelted the SMU net with 18 shots — including 11 in the first half — en route to a 5-0 MIAC victory over the Cardinals.

SMU Cardinal Notes: The Cardinals' last two conference games have both been against Bethel. SMU closed out the 2008 season with a 2-1 overtime win vs. the Royals, then opened conference play vs. Bethel in Tuesday's 3-1 loss. … SMU GK Jon Szafranski (Barrington, Ill.) stopped a season-high six shots in Tuesday's loss vs. Bethel. Szafranski, who boasts a 1.00 goals-against-average and a .778 save percentage, has now stopped 14 shtos this season, pushing his school-record career saves total to 316. … Jacob Bina (West Salem, Wis.) netted his first collegiate goal vs. Bethel Tuesday. … SMU's three goals this season have come from three different players — Bina, Steve Boussie (Troy, Mich.) and Jovenel D'Haiti (Evanston, Ill.). … Boussie also assisted on Bina's goal Tuesday to give him a team-leading three points. … Andreas Scott's penalty kick goal at 11:35 Tuesday was the first first-half goal the Cardinals have allowed this season. … Today's game at Carleton is just the second road game in the Cardinals' first five contests.

Carleton Knight Notes: Wednesday's loss to Gustavus snapped the Knights' two-game winning streak. … Three of Carleton's five games have been decided by shutout — a 2-0 win vs. Concordia and a 1-0 win vs. Carthage, and a 3-0 season-opening loss to Wartburg. … Miles Silbert scored the Knights' lone goal vs. Gustavus Wednesday. It was his second of the season and moved him into a tie with Wes Elfman for the team lead in both goals and points (4). … Pete Semmer, who stopped five GAC shots in the loss Wednesday, has played every minute in goal for the Knights this season, posting a 1.55 goals-against-average and a .765 save percentage. … Carleton has already played two overtime games this season — beating Carthage in the first OT, while falling to North Central (3-2) in double overtime. … Two years ago, the Knights broke the school record for wins (14) and captured their first MIAC regular-season crown, going 8-0-2 in league play. Last year, Carleton won its second straight conference crown — while also winning the MIAC post-season title — en route to a 17-2-3 overall record and a trip to the NCAA national tournament.
