WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team completed a rare three-peat Sunday afternoon.
Three days, three opponents — and most importantly — three Cardinal victories.
Fresh off wins over Northwestern on Friday and Winona State on Saturday — SMU's third straight win over the Warriors — the Cardinals completed the trifecta Sunday, riding a sweep of the three doubles matches to a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory at the Winona Tennis Center.
“We got off to a fast start by sweeping the doubles and kept up the pressure in the six singles matches,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “The singles matches were all hotly contested and we played very well.
“It was a perfect way to cap off a great weekend — the ladies are very pleased.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) picked up a pair of wins for the Cardinals, collecting a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while also teaming with
Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) and
Emily DeWitt (Lino Lakes, Minn.) accounted for SMU's other doubles wins — Allis' a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5, while DeWitt's was a hard-fought, 2-6, 6-4, 10-1 triumph at No. 6.
Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis.) and
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) recorded an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles, with DeWitt hooking up with
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) for an 8-5 victory at No. 3.
The Cardinals (1-1 MIAC, 3-1 overall) are back in action next weekend, traveling to the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Club in Owatonna, Minn., for a conference match against St. Olaf on Saturday, before heading to the U of M Baseline in Minneapolis, Minn., for an MIAC match against St. Catherine on Sunday.
