ST. PAUL, Minn. — Good things have been coming in threes for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team.
Last weekend, the Cardinals put together three straight wins over Northwestern, Winona State and Macalester.
The Cardinals' 5-4 win over Winona State marked the third straight year SMU had beaten the Warriors.
And Sunday, the Cardinals were at it again, beating St. Catherine for the third year in a row, 5-4, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
“This was a big, big win for us,” said Halberg, noting that the Cardinals' three wins over the Wildcats have all been by 5-4 decisions. “We knew coming in it was going to be a war — it's always a way against them. We were able to get out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles and just hung on from there.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had a hand in three of the team's five match wins, as two each posted 6-0-75 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, then teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) and
Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis.) chipped in an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, while
Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) added a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
“It was good to see us bounce back the way we did,” said Halberg, whose team had dropped an 8-1 decision to St. Olaf on Saturday afternoon. “We played very well today from top to bottom.”
