WINONA, Minn. — After edging Bethel 5-4 a year ago, Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals would be in for a real battle Saturday afternoon when the two teams squared off at the Winona Tennis Center.
Fortunately for Halberg, his squad was up to the challenge, getting four straight-set singles wins to go with an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and an 8-5 triumph at No. 3, as the Cardinals collected a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win.
“We knew from a year ago that Bethel was going to come in here ready to give us a real battle — and they did,” said Halberg. “Fortunately, our ladies were up to the challenge and played very, very well.
“This was a good win for us.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.),
Rebecca Snyder (Eden Prairie, Minn.),
Abby Cooper (La Crosse, Wis.) and
Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) all picked up straight-set wins in singles play, while Edwards and Cooper teams for a victory at No. 1 doubles and Allis and
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) hooked up for the No. 3 doubles victory.
The Cardinals, who improve to 3-4 in the MIAC and 8-5 overall, are back in action on Sunday, when they square off against Saint Benedict at 10 a.m. and vs. UW-Stout at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Winona Tennis Center.
