WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Pete Watkins has heard the expression, “If it weren't for bad luck, there'd be no luck at all.”

After watching his squad drop a heartbreaking 1-0 double-overtime decision to Macalester Tuesday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field — the Cardinals' third overtime loss this season — the first-year head coach must be feeling like it's more than an expression.

It's a microcosm of the Cardinals' season.

“The guys battled hard and had their chances to win, we just couldn't get the ball to bounce our way,” Watkins said. “We have ball bounce off the crossbar (early in the second overtime) — three inches lower and we're talking about a win, rather than a loss.

“Give the guys credit, they worked very hard to get that stage, we just didn't convert.”

The Cardinals battled Macalester to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period ¬— thanks in large part to the play of goalkeeper Joey Petrich (Elk River, Minn.).

The Cardinal freshman made the most of his first collegiate start, stopping the first 14 shots he faced, before the Scots' Taylor Rasmussen headed in the game-winner off a corner kick from Robin Forslund midway through the second OT.

“Defensively, I thought we played very well,” said Watkins. “Joey played a great game, he made some outstanding saves and kept us in there.

“It's tough to lose a game that way,” said Watkins, whose team has now dropped a pair of double-overtime games — 2-1 at Lake Forest and 1-0 Tuesday vs. the Scots, while also falling to Carleton 1-0 in one overtime, and battling North Central and Viterbo to 0-0, 2 OTs ties. “The guys are playing hard — they are giving it everything they've got — it would just be nice for one of these one-goal games to go our way for a change.”

The Cardinals (1-8-0 MIAC, 2-12-2 overall) close out their season on Saturday, hosting Augsburg in a 3:30 p.m. conference contest at Ochrymowycz Field.
