Cardinals turn tables on Cobbers with nail-biting victory

Donny Nadeau, SMU Sports Information Director

Match Summary

WINONA, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team came out on the short end of a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Concordia in a match that was decided by a three-set marathon at No. 6 singles.

Saturday afternoon, the Cardinals and Cobbers again battled to a nailbiting decision — and again the end result was determined by a three-set marathon, this time at No. 4 singles.

And, fortunately for SMU, this time around the end result favored the Cardinals, as Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) outlasted Concordia's Melanie Gail 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 at No. 4 singles to lock up a 6-3 Saint Mary's victory.

“It was a great match,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “There was some dynamite tennis played. We knew coming in that this match was going to come right down to the wire — and it did.”

The Cardinals got out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, as Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) won 8-5 at No. 1 and Voigt and Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) added an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Bailey Edwards chipped in straight-set, 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Allis and Voigt added three-set wins — Allis 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 at No. 3 and Voigt 6-4, 2-6, 12-10 at No. 4 — and Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) chipped in a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 6.
