Match Summary
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — It was a match in which no matter how you sliced it, Saint Mary's was going to win.
Unfortunately for coach
Jeff Halberg, it was Saint Mary's College — not his Saint Mary's University women's tennis team — that came away with the 8-1 nonconference victory Monday evening.
The Belles got off to a quick start, sweeping the three doubles matches — but it was anything but easy, as SMU's doubles teams of
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
Killian Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.), and
Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and
Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.) both lost 9-8, while Kristina Wahl (Elgin, Ill.) and Deanne Weber (Reedsburg, Minn.) suffered an 8-5 decision.
Bailey Edwards got the Cardinals' lone win at No. 1 singles, outlasting SMC's Jillian Hurley 6-5, 7-6 at No. 1, while Weber lost a second-set tiebreaker in falling to Kathleen Klauer 6-2, 7-6. SMC completed the win with straight-set wins at No. 2, 3, 4 and 5.
The Cardinals (4-5 overall), close out their spring trip in Adrian, Mich., on Tuesday, taking on the host Bulldogs in a 2 p.m. nonconference match.
