ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — As if playing Saint Benedict at full strength wasn't tough enough, the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had to do so without its top singles player and both members of their top doubles squad.
And the absence of
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and her sister
Killian Edwards showed, as the Blazers handed the Cardinals a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Sunday afternoon.
“I am proud of the effort the ladies put forth,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “Even with Bailey and Killian's help, this would have been a difficult challenge for us.
“But without them, St. Ben's was just too deep for us.”
The Blazers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with 8-1, 8-3 and 8-1 wins in the three doubles matches, and then completed the sweep with straight-set wins in the six singles matches.
The Cardinals (3-7 MIAC, 7-11 overall) are now off until April 30, when they host St. Norbert and UW-Stout in a pair of nonconference matches to close out the regular season.
