WINONA, Minn. — The day didn't begin the way Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach Jeff Halberg was hoping, but it certainly ended that way.

The Cardinals bounced back from a 7-2 nonconference loss to St. Norbert to beat UW-Stout x-x and earn a split in their final two matches of the regular season at the Winona Tennis Center.

“The ladies battled all day,” said Halberg. “We had to juggle our lineup a bit due to injuries and whatnot, but I was very pleased with the way everyone performance — I could not have asked for anything more from them.”

Andrea Allis (Wells, Minn.) and Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) picked up SMU's lone doubles win against St. Norbert, as the duo — making their first appearance at No. 1 doubles — coasted to an 8-0 victory. Voigt followed that up with a three-set, 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 victory at No. 2 singles to account for the Cardinals' other win against the Green Knights.

Voigt and Allis made it a clean sweep at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 win against UW-Stout, fueling a 3-0 SMU start. The Cardinals then got straight-set singles wins from Deanne Weber (Reedsburg, Wis.), Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.), Sarah Kennedy (Lake City, Minn.) and Kristina Wahl (Elgin, Ill.) to seal the win.

“The win over Stout was great way to end the season,” said Halberg, whose squad closed out the season with an 8-12 overall record.
