WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team gave nationally ranked Gustavus all it could handle Sunday afternoon, but the Gusties' depth just proved to be too much, as GAC handed the Cardinals a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
“I thought we played really well,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose Cardinals had their three-match winning streak snapped with the loss. “Everyone put forth a great effort, (Gustavus) just had a little too much firepower.”
McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) had a hand in both Cardinal victories against the Gusties, as the freshman picked up a straight-set, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, then teamed with sister
Bailey Edwards to outlast Gustavus' Megan Gaard-Laurel Krebsbach 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.
The Cardinals (0-2 MIAC, 4-3 overall) are back in action on March 5, when they kick off their four-match spring trip to Orlando, Fla., with a nonconference showdown against King's College.
