WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team earned the No. 25 regional ranking from the ITA Friday afternoon, and Friday evening, the Cardinals showed why they were considered among the top teams in the Central Region, as SMU grabbed a 2-1 lead after the doubles play and cruised to a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over Bethel at the Winona Tennis Center.
“The ladies put on an awesome display,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “They came out and grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in doubles and never looked back.”
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and
McKennah Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) — currently ranked No. 9 in the latest regional rankings, breezed to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while
Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and Lexi Felton (Waukesha, Wis.) added an 8-4 win at No. 4.
Bailey and
McKennah Edwards added straight-sets wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, with
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.),
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Deanne Weber (Reedsburg, Wis.) also picking up singles wins.
The Cardinals, who improve to 1-2 in the MIAC and 7-5 overall, return to action on March 25, traveling to Moorhead, Minn., for a 9 a.m. conference match against Concordia.
