ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University men's tennis team was good — very good — in doubles against Clark in their final spring trip match Wednesday afternoon.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Clark was good — very good — in singles, as the Cougars won five of the six singles matches en route to a 6-3 nonconference victory over SMU.
The Cardinals got off to a roaring start, as
Michael Lunka (Eagan, Minn.) and
Bobby Steingraeber (La Crosse, Wis.) continued the brilliant start to their season, rallying from down 4-1 to beat Diego Angel-Zack Goodstein 9-7 for their 10th straight No. 1 doubles victory.
Sam Puff (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and
Andrew Rangitsch (Oakdale, Minn.) followed up with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, as SMU grabbed a 2-1 lead heading into the singles portion of the match.
In singles, however, it was the Cougars who were dominating, winning five of the six matches in straight set. Puff was the only Cardinal to come away with a win, as the sophomore posted extended his singles winning streak to nine straight with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3.
The Cardinals, who close out their spring trip 2-2 to move to 7-4 overall, return to action on March 16, when they kick off Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 5 p.m. match against Bethel at the Winona Tennis Center.
