WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team had its share of opportunities against St. Thomas Sunday, but the Cardinals could not cash in on them, as the Tommies handed SMU a 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
“It's a tough loss, because I thought we played well enough to pull out the win,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “We had our fair share of chances, St. Thomas held tough to win the match.
“I really have no complaints — we played well and fought right to the end.”
For the second day in a row,
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister
McKennah Edwards picked up wins in both singles and doubles, as the duo teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, while McKennah was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 1 singles and Bailey was a 6-4, 6-4 victor at No. 2.
The Tommies came from behind in the other two doubles matches to grab a 2-1 lead heading into the singles. Deanne Weber (Reedsburg, Wis.) joined Bailey and
McKennah Edwards as a singles winner with 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 6, but UST sealed the win with victories at Nos. 3-4-5 — including a three-set, 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 triumph by Brittany Alexander over
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.) at No. 4.
The Cardinals (2-5 MIAC, 8-8 overall) are now off until April 14-15. They step out of conference play take on Michigan Tech and St. Norbert in DePere, Wis., on April 14, then square off against UW-Stevens Point on April 15.
