GameDay Preview
DE PERE, Wis. — The day didn't quite start the way Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg had hoped, but the end sure put a smile on the Cardinal coach's face.
SMU suffered a heartbreaking, 5-4 nonconference setback to Michigan Tech Saturday afternoon, but followed that up with an impressive 7-2 nonconference win over St. Norbert later in the day.
Against Michigan Tech,
Bailey Edwards (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and sister
McKennah Edwards picked up an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, while Deanna Weber (Reedsburg, Wis.) added a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. SMU's other two wins, at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, came by forfeit.
The Cardinals rebounded from a slow start in its convincing win over St. Norbert, as SMU bounced back from a 2-1 deficit after the three doubles matches to sweep all six singles matches in straight sets.
Bailey and
McKennah Edwards picked up SMU's lone doubles win, recording an 8-5 victory at No. 1. All three Edwards sisters then got into the act in singles, as McKennah won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Bailey won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 and
Killian Edwards was a 6-2, 6-1 victor at No. 3.
Abby Voigt (Burnsville, Minn.),
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Weber completed the sweep with wins at Nos. 4-6.
McKennah Edwards' win at No. 1 singles was her 18th of the season, breaking the single-season school record of 17, previously held by her old sister Bailey.
Bailey Edwards, meanwhile, picked up her 17th and 18th doubles wins Saturday, giving the senior the single-season record for doubles wins in a season.
The Cardinals (9-9 overall) are back in action on Sunday, traveling to Stevens Point, Wis., for a 10:30 a.m. nonconference match against UW-Stevens Point.
