LAKEVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis coaches tabbed Carleton as the team to beat in their preseason coaches' poll — and Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach couldn't agree more.
“There's a reason (Carleton) was picked to win the conference — and we got a first-hand look at it tonight,” said Halberg after watching the Knights hand his Cardinals a 9-0 conference setback at the Lakeville Lifetime Fitness Friday evening. “They are good — very, very good.”
The Knights opened with 8-2, 8-3 and 8-4 wins in the three doubles matches, then completed the shutout by dropping just eight games in sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets.
“It had been a while since we had had a match, and we started out a little slowly,” said Halberg. “We fought hard — they were just too tough.”
The Cardinals (0-1 MIAC, 1-1 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, as they host Northwestern in a nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
