WINONA, Minn. — If the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team was feeling any ill effects from Friday's conference-opening loss to Carleton, they certainly didn't show them on Saturday.
SMU swept four of the six singles matches in straight sets and added a pair of doubles victories in handing Northwestern a 6-3 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.
“That was a great win for the ladies,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team improved to 2-1 overall with the victory. “Northwestern is a tough opponent — one of the top two teams in the UMAC — and they played well today.
“The ladies were up to the challenge and put together a good team win.”
Deanne Webber (Reedburg, Wis.),
Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and
Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.) all picked up wins in both singles and doubles for the Cardinals.
Webber posted a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles, while teaming with Luettmer for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Along with the win at No. 3 doubles, Luetmer was a 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 6 singles, while Zachman chipped in a straight-set, 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, and joined
Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.) for a 9-8 (8-6) victory at No. 1 doubles.
The Cardinals return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Thursday, traveling to the Lakeville (Minn.) Lifetime Fitness for a 6:30 match against Bethel.
