ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University tennis teams were good Saturday evening — St. Thomas, however, was better.

The Tommies, among the top teams in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season, proved to be too much for the Cardinals to handle Saturday evening, as handing both SMU teams 8-1 conference losses.

“Both the men and women played well, we were just outplayed by a very tough opponent,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “The effort was there, St. Thomas was just too deep.”

The Tommies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition in the men's match, but SMU managed just one win in singles, as Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) tallied a 6-4, 6-4, win at No. 6 to account for SMU's lone win.

On the women's side, it was Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) who accounted for the Cardinals' victory, winning at No. 3 singles.

The Cardinal men (1-4 MIAC, 9-4 overall) step out of conference play next weekend, taking on Edgewood and Augustana in a pair of nonconference matches in Madison, Wis., while the SMU women face St. Catherine on Friday at the Winona Tennis Center, before taking on Edgewood and St. Norbert on Sunday in Madison, Wis.,
