ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team gave it their best shot Tuesday afternoon.
Unfortunately, their best wasn't enough against a very talented Berry team, as the Vikings handed SMU an 8-1 nonconference setback.
“The ladies put up a battle against a tough Berry side,” said SMU coach
Jeff Halberg. “Our performances at Nos. 4-6 singles were great — Berry was just too tough at the top of the lineup.”
Berry swept through the three doubles matches, dropping just three games, and the Vikings picked up wins in the top five singles matches. SMU's
Leanne Cleveland (La Crosse, Wis.) recorded the Cardinals' win, outlasting Berry's Lib Lockett 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 6 singles.
SMU (3-3 overall) is right back in action on Wednesday, when they close out their spring trip with a nonconference match against Morningside College.
