GameDay Preview
OWATONNA, Minn. — The day didn't start quite the way that Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg had hoped, but it certainly had a much better ending.
The Cardinals, who dropped an 8-1 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference decision to Gustavus earlier in the day Saturday, rebounded with an impressive 9-0 nonconference win over Bethany Lutheran.
The Cardinals dropped just four games in opening a 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, then continued that dominance in singles, winning all six matches in straight sets — losing 12 games in the 12 sets.
Deanne Webber (Reedsburg, Wis.) — who collected SMU's lone win vs. the Gusties with a three-set victory at No. 3 singles earlier in the day — added a 6-1, 6-1 win against the Vikings, while Kirsten Hoffman (Apple Valley, Minn.),
Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.),
Rachel Luetmer (Loretto, Minn.),
Leanne Cleveland (La Crosse, Wis.) and
Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) also picked up singles wins.
The Cardinals (7-8 overall) are back in action next Saturday, hosting North Central and Concordia at the Winona Tennis Center.
