WINONA, Minn. — The St. Olaf women's tennis team proved to have a very good memory.

The Oles, who lost to Saint Mary's University for the first time under SMU coach Jeff Halberg a year ago, exacted their revenge on Saturday, as St. Olaf handed the Cardinals a 9-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

“We ran into a buzz-saw today,” said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. “We beat St. Olaf last year, and they came in pretty fired up to even things up this year.

“It's not that we played all that poorly — they were just very, very tough.”

The Oles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the three doubles matches, dropping just nine games, before completing the sweep with six straight-set singles victories.

The Cardinals (1-5 MIAC, 6-7 overall) are now off until next weekend, when they travel to St. Peter, Minn., for an MIAC match against Gustavus and a nonconference showdown vs. Bethany Lutheran on Saturday, before heading to St. Joseph, Minn., for an 11 a.m. conference match against Saint Benedict.
