Win at No. 6 singles lifts SMU to win
Match Summary

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Talk about a fight to the finish.

The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team outlasted — literally — Hamline Saturday afternoon, as the Cardinals got a three-set win by Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) to beat the Pipers 5-4 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.

"What a great match," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "We got out to a 4-1 lead, but Hamline came storming back and we needed Haley's win at No 6 singles to pull out the win.

"It was a great battle."

The Cardinals opened the match with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, and added straight-set singles wins by Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.), only to have Hamline rally with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles to pull even 4-4 — and set up Jorgensen's heroics.

Jorgensen dropped the first set 6-2, but rallied with a 6-3 win in the second set and a 10-7 victory in the third to seal the win.

The Cardinals (1-1 MIAC, 4-2 overall) are back in action on Sunday, hosting Concordia in a 9:30 a.m. conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
