MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team entered Friday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Catherine riding a season-high four-match winning streak.
Unfortunately for SMU coach
Jeff Halberg, the MIAC's defending regular-season champions proved to be in a streak-snapping sort of mood, as St. Catherine dominated the three doubles matches and carried that momentum to a 9-0 conference win at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
"We ran into a buzz-saw in the doubles portion," said Halberg, whose team managed to win just three games in falling 8-1, 8-0 and 8-2 in the three doubles matches. "I thought we bounced back pretty well (in singles) and really put together some great efforts.
"St. Catherine is an extremely deep and talented team — I was very proud of our effort tonight."
After cruising to the three doubles wins the Wildcats added straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches. SMU's
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) forced a third set in her No. 6 singles match, but after opening with a 6-4 win, the Cardinal freshman fell 6-1, 10-2.
The Cardinals (2-2 MIAC, 5-3 overall) are right back in action on Saturday, as SMU hosts Gustavus in a noon conference matchup at the Winona Tennis Center.
