WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team took the court for the third time in as many days Sunday morning — which should have been good news for visiting Morningside (Iowa).

It wasn't.

The Cardinals, despite back-to-back conference matches against the top two teams in the MIAC the previous two days, still had plenty left in the tank — and proved to be rather ungracious hosts — handing the visiting Mustangs a 7-2 nonconference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

"We played really well today," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "It was an excellent performance — especially considering it was our third match in three days."

The Cardinals raced out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion of the match, as Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.) and Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.), and Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) each combined for 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, while Leanne Cleveland (La Crosse, Wis.) and Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in a 9-7 victory at No. 3.

Krull, Reinisch and Vandenberg followed with straight-set singles wins, with Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) adding a three-set, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 victory at No. 6.

The Cardinals (6-4 overall) are back on the court on Saturday, traveling to eastern Wisconsin for nonconference matches against St. Norbert and UW-River Falls.
