ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals were in for a fight-to-the-finish when they took the court against St. Norbert Saturday afternoon.

And, unfortunately for Halberg and the Cardinals, the Green Knights did not disappoint.

St. Norbert won two of the three doubles matches to open the teams' nonconference match, then added victories in five of the six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory.

The Cardinals took out their frustrations on UW-River Falls in their second nonconference match of the day, as SMU handed the Falcons a 7-2 setback.

"St. Norbert came into this match 18-3 for a reason," said Halberg. "They are a very tough, deep team — and they played very well.

"We did a nice job of bouncing back (against UW-River Falls)," Halberg added. "It was a nice way to end the day."

Lindsey Reinisch (Hastings, Minn.) and Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) picked up a 9-8 victory at No. 2 doubles against St. Norbert, while Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Neb.) collected a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles to account for SMU's lone singles win against the Green Knights.

SMU raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles against UW-River Falls, as Grace Zachman (Elk River, Minn.)-Leanne Cleveland (La Crosse, Wis.), Reinisch-Vandenberg and Jorgensen-Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) were all victorious.

The Cardinals then completed the win with singles victories by Reinisch, Vandenberg, Cleveland and Jorgensen.

The Cardinals (7-5 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday, as SMU returns home to host Bethel in a 1 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center.
