GameDay PreviewNORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg knew his Cardinals would need their "A" game against St. Olaf in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon.
Unfortunately for Halberg, not even the Cardinals' "A" game was enough, as St. Olaf raced out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back in handing SMU a 9-0 setback.
"We started pretty well in doubles — gave them a real battle in all three (doubles) matches," said Halberg. "But two injuries in singles play popped our balloon.
"St. Olaf is very tough, and they played extremely well today."
The Cardinals made the Oles fight for every point in the three doubles matches, before falling 8-5 at No. 1, 9-8 (7-2) at No. 2 and 8-1 at No. 3.
And that momentum carried over into the singles portion of the conference match, as the Oles swept all six singles matches in straight sets — including Lizzie Carlson's 7-6, 6-4 victory over
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) at No. 5.
The Cardinals (3-5 MIAC, 8-7 overall) are right back in action on Sunday, as SMU hosts Saint Benedict in a 9 a.m. conference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
