WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's tennis team entered Sunday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match against St. Thomas riding a wave of momentum from Saturday's 5-4 victory over Bethel.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, not enough that momentum could help them against the high-powered Tommies, as UST handed SMU a 9-0 conference setback at the Winona Tennis Center.

"St. Thomas is a tough, tough team and they played very well today," said SMU coach Jeff Halberg. "We started out pretty strong in doubles, but faded a bit in the singles portion.

"Overall, though, it was a good weekend for us."

The Tommies opened the match with 8-5, 8-4 and 8-1 wins in the three doubles matches, then completed the sweep with straight-set victories in all six singles matches."

The Cardinals (3-4 MIAC, 8-6 overall) are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Northfield, Minn., for a 1 p.m. conference match against St. Olaf.
