Match SummaryMINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — It wasn't the start, but the finish that paid huge dividends for the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Cardinals rallied from a 2-1 deficit, posting four straight-set singles wins—not to mention a three-set marathon victory at No. 3 to hand Macalester a 6-3 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference setback Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center.
Â
"That was a huge win for us," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "Any win in the MIAC is big, and when you can win a match against a team that was picked ahead of you in the MIAC Preseason Coaches Poll, it makes it that much sweeter.
Â
"Everyone contributed to a great team win."
Â
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) and
Stacey Buss (Chicago, Ill.) picked up Saint Mary's lone win in doubles play, while
Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.),
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.), Jorgensen and
Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) all chipped in straight-set doubles wins, and
Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) added a three-set, 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 win at No. 3 to secure the victory.
Â
The Cardinals (3-4 MIAC, 7-5 overall) are now off until April 8, when they entertain UW-Stout in a 4 p.m. nonconference match at the Winona Tennis Center.
