ORLANDO, Fla. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota's lengthy winning streak got put to the test Wednesday afternoon in the Cardinals' nonconference match against Morningside (Iowa).
Thanks in part to three, three-set singles victories, the Cardinals passed that test with flying colors, as Saint Mary's closed out its spring trip a perfect 3-0—and pushed their winning streak to 10 in a row—with an 8-1 victory over the Mustangs.
"Great way for the guys to finish off their spring trip," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg, whose team's 10-match winning streak is the longest in his 15-year tenure as the Cardinals' head coach. "Everyone played well and got the job done."
After racing to a 3-0 lead after the doubles matches—winning 8-0, 8-5 and 9-7—the Cardinals picked up wins in five of the six singles matches, including three, three-set marathons.
Tim Wolford rallied from a set down to win 5-7, 6-0, 10-6 at No. 1, while
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) added a 6-2, 6-7, 10-8 victory at No. 4 and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) chipped in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 triumph at No. 5.
The Cardinals (10-2 overall) are now off until March 14, when they return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 2:30 p.m. matchup with Concordia at the Winona Tennis Center.
