Eagles too much for Cardinals in season finale

Match Summary

LAKEVILLE, Minn. — It wasn't quite the way the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis was hoping to end its 2015 season, but coach Jeff Halberg certainly couldn't fault the Cardinals' effort in their season-ending 9-0 nonconference loss to Northwestern (Minn.).

"It was a tough loss to end the season, but we lost to a great Northwestern team," Halberg said. "The ladies gave it everything they had—just like they have all season long—we just ran into a tough, tough opponent."

Northwestern took control from the start, dropping just eight games in sweeping the three doubles matches—8-3, 8-4, 8-1—to take a 3-0 advantage.

The Eagles carried that momentum into the singles portion, collecting five straight-set victories. Saint Mary's Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.) opened with a 7-5 win in the first set of her No. 3 singles match against Birdie Bardwell, but the Cardinal sophomore fell 6-4, 10-3 in the final two sets in dropping the three-set marathon.

The Cardinals close out their season with an 8-10 overall record—including a 3-7 showing in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
