Cardinals kick off busy week with win vs. Stout

Match Summary

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis team kicked off a busy week in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon, as the Cardinals collected a 6-3 nonconference win over UW-Stout at the Winona Tennis Center.

"This was a great win for us," said Saint Mary's coach Jeff Halberg, whose team plays a pair of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road matches this weekend, traveling St. Peter, Minn., to face Gustavus on Saturday, before heading further north to St. Joseph, Minn., on Sunday to take on Saint Benedict. "We played very consistent tennis and got a great prep for our bee weekend of conference matches."

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches, as Kirsten Hoffmann (Apple Valley, Minn.)-Megan Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.) collected an 8-4 win at No. 1, while Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.)-Ashley Syed (Lewisville, Texas) added an 8-5 victory at No. 2.

Hoffmann, Vandenberg, Jorgensen, and Syed all followed up their doubles wins with straight-set singles victories in helping the Cardinals improve to 8-5 overall.

"This is a busy stretch for us," said Halberg. "And it was grab some momentum right from the start."
