GameDay Preview
ST. PETER, Minn. —
Brett Giesen (Cato, Wis.)—coming off an opening-round loss on Friday—rebounded nicely during Saturday's second day of the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional, as the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota junior collected an 8-5 singles win over Concordia's Matthew Engum.
Unfortunately, that's where his tournament run would end, as Giesen fell to Loras' Kevin Murphy 8-5 in his second singles match of the day.
Brenden Amiotte (Rapid City, S.D.) also came up short in Saturday's USTA/ITA singles action, falling to Concordia's David Youngs 9-8 (7-0), while the Cardinal doubles team of
Alex Zuzek (Hastings, Minn.) and
Alex Holm (Red Wing, Minn.) fell to Concordia's David Schneck/Erik Porter 8-1.
In consolation action at the Midwest Open, also hosted by Gustavus, Paul Stewart (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) was beaten by Concordia's Jesse Scheenberger 8-0, and the doubles team of Bobby Tiedemann (Euclid, Minn.) and
Kyle Swanson suffered an 8-3 setback to Grinnell's Caleb Ulring/Raghuram Intrui.
The Cardinals kick off their 2017 spring season on Jan. 27, entertaining Martin Luther in a 5:30 p.m. match at the Winona Tennis Center. Saint Mary's will being Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play a day later, hosting Carleton at 3 p.m., also at the Winona Tennis Center.
