WINONA, Minn. — If Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's tennis coach
Jeff Halberg had any fears of an emotional—or physical—letdown when his team took the court for their second match of the day Saturday, the Cardinals quickly put those fears to rest.
In impressive fashion.
The Cardinals—coming off a thrilling, 5-4 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Saint Benedict earlier in the day—rolled to their second straight victory, cruising to a 9-0 nonconference win over Martin Luther at the Winona Tennis Center.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, getting wins from Kirsten Hoffman (Apple Valley, Minn.)-
Katie Krull (Rochester, Minn.), Haley Vandenberg (De Pere, Wis.)-
Ashley Syed (), and
Haley Jorgensen (Fallon, Nev.)-Marissa Kinzer (Aitkin, Minn.)
And in singles, the Cardinals completed the sweep, getting straight-set wins from
Laura Sonday (West St. Paul, Minn.), Vandenberg,
Julia Boeve (St. James, Minn.), Jorgensen, and
Sheyenne Bauer (Cannon Falls, Minn.), while
Summer Lardy (Richmond, Minn.) completed the sweep with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 10-6 win at No. 6.
The Cardinals (3-1 overall) head south on Feb. 27-28, taking on Webber International, Otterbein, and Adrian during their spring break trip to Florida.
